authentication problems

The server haring.wever.org (haring.wlan.hinet.net.au) crashed (possible power outage as hinet.net.au was also down). When it came back up network connection was not working. Saliya restarted the machine and everything worked. After logging in i noticed network problems similar to when I first installed gentoo on the box. The solution was to run
ping -i 60 www.uio.no
inside a screen command, this seems to keep the network interface alive. Why? I have no idea. Oslo university is used because it is close to where I live (infact on the same exchange).

But more seriously imap was not working. Neither 143 or 993 (ssl) was working.
I originally thought the problem was only squirrelmail, not passing the username and password through, and I played with /etc/php/apache2-php5/php.ini. This ruined the discussion pages, they just display junk characters, and it took me a few days to realise. Restoring the changes in php.ini fixed everything.

Finding this >>page pretty much helped me understand what to do. Debugging, edit /etc/courier/imapd to read

DEBUG_LOGIN=1
revealed authentication problems:
[imapd] LOGIN: DEBUG: ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1], command=LOGIN
[imapd] LOGIN: DEBUG: ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1], username=mick
[imapd] authdaemon: starting client module
[imapd] authdaemon: TEMPFAIL - no more modules will be tried
[imapd] LOGIN FAILED, ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1]

By stopping saslauthd, and restarting authdaemond, imapd worked properly.

saslauthd (cyrus-sasl) was installed because I originally followed this gentoo >>documentation about installing courier and squirrelmail, unfortunately it had additional stuff and I installed too much. Removal required replacing "sasl" with "-sasl" in /etc/make.conf and then:

emerge unmerge cyrus-sasl
emerge postfix
Not too sure what else needs rebuilding :-

But i still cannot get imapd-ssl to start:

haring courier-imap # /etc/init.d/courier-imapd-ssl start
 * Starting courier-imapd over SSL …
bind: Address already in use
ll_daemon_start: Resource temporarily unavailable

The problem was found by using:

haring ~ # netstat -a -p
Active Internet connections (servers and established)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp        0      0 *:imaps                 *:*                     LISTEN      7177/famd
tcp        ...{snip]...
After stopping famd I could start courier-imapd-ssl again. I found I could start famd afterwards, but I don't know how to specify service start orders in gentoo…
